100 Alabama Miles Challenge
The 100 Alabama Miles Challenge is a statewide program designed to inspire all Alabamians to kick-start an active, healthy lifestyle while exploring our beautiful state and connecting with fellow participants. We challenge all Alabamians to walk, run, hike, bike, swim, paddle, ride or roll 100 miles each year and to do so by visiting Alabama’s many wonderful parks, nature preserves, and rivers. Alabama State Collaborative Workshop on Walkable Communities
The State Obesity Task Force supports efforts to increase walking in Alabama as a way to improve physical activity levels. In the summer of 2017 the Alabama State Collaborative Workshop on Walkable Communities brought together state and local leaders and private sector stakeholders to discuss strategies to increase walking and create more walkable communities. Recommendations were developed by the group and the Final Report outlines the steps needed to accomplish the recommendations.
National Nutrition Month
During the month of March, Registered Dietitian Nutritionists observe and promote National Nutrition Month with tips and recipes that emphasize the importance of healthy food choices. The theme of National Nutrition Month in 2018 is "Go Further with Food." Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed a proclamation in 2018 designating March as National Nutrition Month in Alabama, and encouraging Alabamians to establish healthy eating and exercise habits.

CDC Data: Alabama Has Nation's Third Highest Rate of Obesity
2016 state- and territory-specific data on adult obesity rates is now available. According to the data, Alabama and Arkansas are tied for third-highest rate of obesity in the country at 35.7 percent. Visit the CDC for more information.
Scale Back Alabama
Scale Back Alabama is a statewide weight-loss contest that encourages citizens to pursue a healthier lifestyle by eating right and exercising. The contest will return in January 2019. Visit Scale Back Alabama for more information.
